Background of the Study

Terminally ill cancer patients experience significant emotional distress as they cope with the physical, psychological, and existential challenges associated with their illness. The emotional impact of a cancer diagnosis, particularly in terminal stages, can lead to anxiety, depression, and feelings of hopelessness, which in turn may affect the patient’s quality of life and overall well-being (Jones et al., 2023). Oncology nurses play a vital role in managing the emotional distress of terminally ill cancer patients, providing psychological support, palliative care, and helping patients navigate the end-of-life process with dignity (Smith & Davidson, 2024).

At Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, oncology nurses are trained to provide compassionate care, including psychological support, pain management, and coordination with other healthcare professionals to ensure holistic care for terminally ill patients. They employ strategies such as active listening, counseling, and connecting patients with support services to alleviate emotional suffering and improve their overall quality of life during the terminal phase (Walker et al., 2023). This study aims to appraise the role of oncology nurses in addressing emotional distress among terminally ill cancer patients at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.

Statement of the Problem

While oncology nurses are crucial in supporting terminally ill cancer patients emotionally, there may be gaps in the implementation of psychological support strategies due to insufficient training, lack of resources, or high nurse-patient ratios. Emotional distress in terminally ill patients often remains inadequately addressed, impacting their quality of life and potentially hindering the effectiveness of palliative care. This study seeks to evaluate the extent of oncology nurses' involvement in alleviating emotional distress and the challenges they face in providing emotional support at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of oncology nurses in addressing the emotional distress of terminally ill cancer patients at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.

2. To evaluate the strategies employed by oncology nurses to alleviate emotional distress in terminally ill cancer patients.

3. To identify the barriers faced by oncology nurses in addressing emotional distress in terminally ill cancer patients.

Research Questions

1. What role do oncology nurses play in addressing the emotional distress of terminally ill cancer patients at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital?

2. What strategies do oncology nurses use to alleviate emotional distress in terminally ill cancer patients?

3. What challenges do oncology nurses face in providing emotional support to terminally ill cancer patients?

Research Hypotheses

1. Oncology nurses' interventions significantly reduce emotional distress in terminally ill cancer patients.

2. There is a significant relationship between the type of emotional support provided by oncology nurses and the reduction in distress levels among terminally ill cancer patients.

3. There are significant barriers faced by oncology nurses in addressing emotional distress in terminally ill cancer patients at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on oncology nurses working with terminally ill cancer patients at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting by oncology nurses, challenges in measuring emotional distress effectively, and possible barriers to providing consistent care due to hospital workload or resource constraints.

Definitions of Terms

• Terminally Ill Cancer Patients: Cancer patients diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer where curative treatment is no longer effective, and palliative care is the focus.

• Emotional Distress: Psychological suffering experienced by patients, often involving anxiety, depression, and feelings of hopelessness or fear.

• Oncology Nurses: Registered nurses specializing in the care of cancer patients, including providing psychological and emotional support.
